3 alternatives to Volossal
and why they are bad

Major Publishing Houses

When major publishing companies release your book, they own it. Period. They paid for everything so it belongs to them.

As your book sells, they will keep your royalties until you have paid for everything that went into making the book. This includes: artwork, design, layout, photography, mechanicals, printing, promotional materials and advertising. These costs add up to quite a bit and until you sell several thousands of books, you will not see a dime. And when you have finally paid for all that out of your dividends, you still do not own your book. Worse, you can't just up and leave. They own the book. Even if you wanted to move to another publisher, that publisher would have to buy the rights to your book.

And here's the real agony: they can title the book what ever they want, use whatever artwork/photo they want for the cover and edit story any way they want and you have ZERO say.

Self Publishing

There are lots of self publishing companies out there that offer great deals to publish your own book. This is a perfectly reasonable route to take if you are producing a "vanity book". This is the type of book that amatuers publish to print a few copies to sell to friends and family. There's nothing wrong with that, but it's not real publishing.

Here's the drawbacks:
• The design will not be professional. They just look amatuer and generic. These companies do not pay attention to widows, orphans and hyphens. The cover art will be made by a low level designer or someone in a foreign country. Remember, they have to keep their costs way down to extract the largest profit margin from you.
• You are still paying for your book, but you do not have control over it.
• Self published books are not respected by major retailers. They do not bother with them.
• Self published books are not respected by reviewers or any media outlet. Again, they don't even look at them.

Not Publishing

This is the absolute worst thing you can do. Do not let time, fear, life, your friends, your family, anything or anyone stop you from making art. So what if you don't make a ton of money. So what if you get some bad reviews. So what if your friends don't like it. The joy is in the creative process. The excitement is being in the game. Ask any author on the Volossal label and they will tell you that they are having the time of their life.

Remember, if you don't publish it, it dies with you. No one will publish your work after you're gone. But a properly published work lives on forever. Seriously, don't take life for granted. Don't wait. Make your mark now. Then make it again and again.
